- The Pine Ridge Reservation is home to approximately 40,000 people
- 52% of the population lives below Federal poverty levels, with an 85% unemployment rate and yearly median income estimated to be $3500
- Winter arrives in October bringing strong winds and bitter cold with
Temperatures with a wind chill that can reach well below -50*F
- Many (extended) families live in dilapidated old trailers or old two room buildings with some people sleeping in old cars
- 65% of the Reservation homes are substandard lacking adequate insulation and central heating
- 54% of the Reservation homes lack water, electricity, sewage systems, and phones
- Approximately $1500 - $1800 in heating assistance per household is needed each year, depending on the cost of propane and winter severity
- Federal LEAP or Tribal Assistance Programs can only offer around $400. Other organizations may offer assistance with average aid of $150
- The Tribal Council estimated a need for 4,000+ new homes in order to combat substandard dilapidated old housing and homelessness
